Just like any other society in the world, American society has its
fair share of problems – apathy being one of the main causes of those
problems. Our society has extremely polluted areas, people homeless in
the streets, drug-related crimes, hate crimes – the list could go on for
miles. Most of these problems are due to the apathy of our society. We
think the problems are too far gone; therefore, we turn our heads and
stop worrying about them.
Of course, this is generally speaking. Not all Americans are apathetic,
and those who aren’t are trying to make a difference – trying to make a
change. Police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, teachers, Salvation
Army workers – all of these people in our society do what they can to
make America a safer place. Among that group of people are the medical
professionals who provide health care when purchasing health insurance
just isn’t an option.
Programs such as Medicaid and Medicare are available for individuals who
are either too old or disabled to work, or have simply been dealt a hand
of cards that make it nearly impossible to find a way to purchase
adequate health insurance, such as single mothers. These programs help
disabled and low or no income individuals obtain the health care they
need.
Other programs, such as health clinics that offer health care either for
free or based on an individual’s income also help provide the health
care the members of our society need. While the doctors and nurses who
work at these clinics don’t work for free, they realize that working at
these clinics can do more to help society than working at some
nationally renowned hospital in some big city somewhere. These health
care professionals aren’t apathetic to the problems of our society.
Those people who help make programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and free
health clinics operate should be commended for their efforts to improve
our society.
