When people refer to alternative health insurance plans, they are
usually referring to health insurance plans that cover medical practices
that are considered “alternative” to traditional procedures, surgeries,
operations, and medications. Choosing to treat back problems with
acupuncture rather than back surgery would be an example of having
alternative health care. Some alternative health care practices stem
from very old religious and spiritual origins, but have survived the
years due to a strong belief in their effectiveness.
Finding low cost alternative health care insurance is easy enough,
considering the fact that most alternative health care procedures and
medications cost much less than the traditional medical procedures and
medications. Going back to the acupuncture and back surgery example –
which procedure do you think is more expensive? Obviously back surgery
is more expensive as it is a much more involved procedure than
acupuncture. Back surgery requires surgical instruments, anesthesia,
medications, and usually more than one doctor – acupuncture does not.
However, don’t mistake the simplicity of acupuncture for
ineffectiveness; many people have very satisfactory results. Otherwise,
it wouldn’t have survived all these years.
Other examples of health care that are sometimes categorized as
alternative health care include chiropractic, which aims to prevent and
treat musculoskeletal conditions; homeopathy, which is a more
controversial form of alternative health care that treats sicknesses or
diseases with the same form of sickness or disease; and naturopathy,
which is usually used as a broad term that covers many other alternative
health care practices, and refers to using more “natural” ways of
helping the body heal itself.
There are some health insurance companies out there that provide
coverage for both alternative health care practices and traditional
health care practices. If you’re considering an alternative health care
plan, make sure you understand the insurance company’s policy on
combining, or not combining, the two different kinds of health care.
Make your decision based on how comfortable you are with that policy.
